A Pope at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace National Sports Centre has hosted many historical events and figures in its past. Its spacious accommodations allows for large events with high capacity audience numbers. The outdoor football stadium can seat up to 15,500 spectators and hold up to 44,000 spectators.

On Pentecost Sunday May 30th 1982, Pope John Paul II was on site at Crystal Palace. The Polish Pope arrived to Crystal Palaces’ outdoor stadium to meet with the over 20,000 attendees. Some of those who were in attendance consisted of Polish refugees. Pope John Paul II met with the public, rode around the track in the Popemobile and gave an addressed speech to the crowd.

Pope John Paul II’s visit to Crystal Palace was during his trip to the United Kingdom from the 28th of May to the 2nd of June that year. The Pope traveled to England, Scotland and Wales. This was the first visit to the UK by a reigning Pope. During his time in the UK, the Pope visited nine cities and delivered sixteen major addresses. Pope John Paul II also met with Queen Elizabeth II and the Supreme Governor of the Church of England while on his trip.

Crystal Palace is a diverse facility that can accommodate a variety of events, large or small, for all types of clients.
